My Favorite Electrolytes
The Great Electrolyte Review: Which One Is Actually Worth Your Money?
Walk into any health store or scroll social media for five minutes, and you'll find dozens of electrolyte products claiming to hydrate you better than water.
Some promise better workouts.
Some promise more energy.
Some claim to cure headaches, fatigue, and brain fog.
Others are marketed simply because they're trendy.
The question is...
Do they actually work? And are they all the same?
Not even close.
Today I'm breaking down some of the most popular electrolyte brands on the market, what makes them different, who they're best for, and where they fall on my personal list.
First... What Are Electrolytes?
Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electrical charge and help your body function properly.
The major electrolytes include:
Sodium
Potassium
Magnesium
Calcium
Chloride
Phosphate
They regulate:
Hydration
Muscle contractions
Nerve function
Blood pressure
Heart rhythm
Energy production
Despite the marketing, electrolytes are not magic. If you're eating a balanced diet and not losing large amounts of fluid, you may not need supplemental electrolytes every day.
However, they can be incredibly helpful for:
Athletes
Heavy sweaters
Outdoor workers
People following ketogenic or carnivore diets
Those using GLP-1 medications
Illness involving vomiting or diarrhea
Long endurance events
Hot summer days
What Makes One Electrolyte Better Than Another?
Not all electrolyte mixes are created equal.
Things I look at include:
Sodium content
Potassium content
Magnesium source
Sugar content
Artificial sweeteners
Artificial colors
Additional vitamins or fillers
Taste
Price
Third-party testing
Many products are marketed as "hydration" drinks while containing very little sodium—the electrolyte you lose the most through sweat. Higher-sodium formulas tend to work better for heavy sweaters and endurance athletes, while products containing sugar can be useful during prolonged exercise because glucose helps drive sodium and water absorption in the intestine.
LMNT
LMNT has become one of the most recognizable names in the electrolyte world.
Highlights
Very high sodium
No sugar
Potassium
Magnesium
Sweetened with stevia
LMNT was originally designed around the needs of people eating low-carb and ketogenic diets, where sodium requirements are often higher.
Pros
Excellent for heavy sweaters
Great during long workouts
Keto-friendly
Simple ingredient list
Cons
Very salty
Not everyone needs this much sodium
More expensive than some competitors
My thoughts:
I love the taste, however, sometimes I don’t want the salt. I often can’t drink many of these as I feel like the salt starts to get to me. I don’t feel hydrated and can often wake in the morning puffy.
Ballerina Farm Farmer Hydrate (My personal fave!!)
Ballerina Farm entered the hydration space with an emphasis on simple ingredients and a more natural approach.
Their formula includes ingredients such as sea salt, coconut water powder, sea moss, and fruit-based flavoring instead of artificial dyes or large amounts of sugar.
Pros
Simple ingredient profile
Natural flavors
Appealing for families wanting fewer additives
Cons
Lower sodium than some performance-focused formulas
Premium pricing
My thoughts:
I LOVE how clean these ingredients are. I feel like my body likes these… that may sound silly, but its true! I feel hydrated after I drink them. Also, they taste delicious. The ingredients used are so good. Highly recommend. Favorite flavor is lemon lime basil.
Trace Minerals
Trace Minerals has been around for years and focuses on providing ionic trace minerals sourced from concentrated seawater.
Unlike many powders, they also offer liquid electrolyte drops that can be added to almost any beverage (although I didn’t try those ones).
Pros
Provides trace minerals in addition to electrolytes
Multiple product options
Good for people wanting unflavored choices
Cons
Taste can be strong
Product line can be confusing
My thoughts:
These are great, but that doesn’t go for my family. I personally like the strawberry coconut flavor. I love it!
Liquid I.V.
Liquid I.V. became wildly popular through influencer marketing and big-box retailers.
Unlike many electrolyte mixes, Liquid I.V. contains sugar, which the company says helps improve water absorption.
Pros
Widely available
Good flavor options
Useful during endurance exercise or illness
Cons
Contains added sugar
Some people find it too sweet
Lower sodium than high-performance formulas
My thoughts:
Used to be my favorite. I have found that my body doesn’t always feel hydrated after a lot of use. The flavors feel strong and artificial.
Melaleuca Hydrate
Melaleuca offers an electrolyte drink designed more for everyday hydration than endurance athletics.
The formula generally contains electrolytes along with vitamins and flavoring.
Pros
Pleasant taste
Easy daily hydration
Includes additional nutrients
Cons
Not as performance-focused
Formula differs from higher-sodium products
My thoughts:
I really like these! I personally love the frosted lime flavor. They feel hydrating and taste so good.
Xyngular
Xyngular includes hydration products within its wellness lineup, but not necessarily an electrolyte product.
These products typically combine electrolytes with vitamins and other wellness ingredients rather than focusing strictly on athletic hydration.
Pros
Easy for existing Xyngular users
Multiple flavor options
Cons
May not contain enough sodium for heavy sweaters
Often more expensive because of the MLM business model
My thoughts:
I love that it’s added in, but I do wish it was a product all on its own. All their products are clean and taste delicious!

Which Electrolyte Is Best?
The answer depends entirely on why you're drinking it.
Someone working cattle all day in New Mexico needs something different than someone sitting at a desk drinking 120 ounces of water because TikTok told them to.
Someone running a marathon needs something different than someone recovering from the stomach flu.
Someone eating a ketogenic diet may need considerably more sodium than someone eating a standard American diet.
There isn't one perfect electrolyte.
There is only the best electrolyte for your situation.

Final Thoughts
Hydration isn't just about drinking more water—it's about replacing what your body actually loses.
Before buying the latest viral packet, look past the marketing. Read the label. Compare the sodium, potassium, magnesium, sugar, and ingredient list, and choose the product that fits your lifestyle and your goals.
As with most things in health, the best choice is rarely the trendiest one—it's the one that makes sense for your body.
